The ambitious appeal aims to raise £30 million by 2018 to fund sight-restoring operations in some of the poorest countries in the world.
That operation is cataract surgery. Commonplace in this part of the world but a million miles away from many sufferers.
And the cost of this surgery for one adult is just £30. £30 to give someone back the gift of sight.
Many people can’t even afford to get to a hospital, let alone have the surgery, and so they live with deteriorating sight which, inevitably, means they can no longer work.
People like Mr Winesi, below.
And so, to support this appeal and to celebrate how precious our sight is, this week’s Gallery theme is: Eyes.
I couldn’t imagine not being able to see this cheeky little face, or that of Max’s big brother.
I couldn’t imagine not being able to look the love of my life in the eye to tell him how much he means to me. (yes, I know… soppy. I’m totally allowed after so many years of singledom.)
Or seeing my friend’s beautiful baby girl in my big boy’s arms.
And to think that so many people in the world suffer from blindness when it could be fixed so easily.
I just… there are no words.
